Week #12 – High Angle Photography – Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

Composition is an important part in storytelling with your photography. Deciding the angle in which you will direct your camera at your subject or point of interest can make a huge difference in the emotion you are portraying. In this week’s challenge, I want you to capture from a higher perspective. Your subject can be anything you would like. The challenge is to get higher than it. Enjoy this different perspective on capturing photos this week. Week #11 – Straight Out Of Camera – Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

Welcome to the Week #11 Ditch Auto Weekly Photo Challenge. This week I want to challenge you to get it right in camera. I have mentioned many times before that the best policy is to try and get it right in camera rather than relying on post processing to fix your images. I have watched as many of you have improved in many areas of your photography over the past weeks and I think it is time to share some photos straight out of your camera. In week’s past, we would take pictures, edit them, and upload them. This week I want you to submit a photo with no post processing at all. Have fun this week capturing new photos! Week #10 – Black & White – Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

Up until now, we have focused mostly on the camera. As Photographers, we often spend time on our computer with our images after we capture them. This week, we will be challenging ourselves to create a Black and White image. I want you to capture your images in color on your camera. Try to get exposure and the look you are going for in-camera, but imagine it as a black and white image. You will then create your black and white conversion using Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, or whichever photo editing application you use. Feel free to play around with this. See what kind of emotion you can create from making changes to your image through black and white conversion. Week #10 Challenge Special!!! DJI launched their Phantom 4 Pro with a better camera than they have ever put on a Phantom line drone. The larger sensor does a great job of rendering out fantastic photos. Even with the better camera, it is still important to have your settings right to assure you are getting consistently great photos from your Phantom 4 or Phantom 4 Pro. In this video, I discuss the top 5 photo settings I change in my Phantom drones to get the best photos possible every time. Week #9 – Bokeh Effect- Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

Our last two photo challenges have been a little basic, so now it is time to step it up again. This week’s photo challenge is Bokeh. The Bokeh Effect in photography is achieved by using a wider aperture which produces a shallow depth of field. With a shallow depth of field, the background is blurred. The Bokeh Effect happens in the lens when the lens tries to render the out of focus shapes in the background. The size and shape of the bokeh can vary depending on the shape of the iris of your lens and the size and shape of the lighter objects in the background. Bokeh usually happens in lighter areas of your photo. In this challenge, I want you to find something interesting to be your main subject. You can see in the image samples below and in the challenge video that I have achieved bokeh in many different ways. Bokeh does not have to be in the background, it can even be in the foreground while your in-focus subject is in the background. Have fun with this week’s challenge. Introduce light in a different way and see what you can do when that light is out of focus. Week #8 – Our Gear Bag – Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

This week’s challenge is going to be a bit different. The challenge to get out and take photos is still here this week, but for this week’s challenge, I would like you to photograph your gear bag or something that you carry with you often. This is not to see who has the most or the best gear, this is to help start discussions around what gear we use and why we carry it with us. My gear bag can look completely different depending on what I plan to shoot. I have a smaller bag that I use when I just want to have a camera around and I have large bags that I use to travel for commercial photography jobs. Besides photography gear, I also have a few things I carry on myself that I enjoy. I try to stay minimal, but I also like to be functional and be prepared. Check out this week’s video on the topic of Our Gear and Every Day Carry. Week #7 – The Sky – Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

This week we are turning our attention to the sky. The Sky is amazing and vast. It can have a lot of texture and shape. It can also be a challenge to get a very dynamic photo of the sky. The weather also has a lot to do with the sky, so you can’t always just point your camera up and take a picture. This week I want you to try and take a picture of the sky that you find interesting. Don’t just take a random picture of the sky, wait until you see something interesting. Maybe it’s a jet passing through the sky, or perhaps an interesting ray of light passing between a hole in the clouds. Photographing the sky can be challenging because the sky can have a lot of contrast areas. This week I would like you to focus more on capturing what your eye finds interesting over getting to technical, but try to get your exposure close so there are not any blown out areas in your photo. Upload your Week #7 challenge photos to the new Album in the Ditch Auto Group: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.1434742033216327&type=3 If you post your photos to your social media accounts, use the hashtag #ditchautochallenge Here are a few examples of The Sky from photos James Horton from our Ditch Auto Facebook Group has taken recently. Week #6 – High Key Photography – Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

It’s supposed to rain all week where I live, but it’s going to be a bright week in the Ditch Auto Facebook Group. This week we are challenging ourselves to take a high key photo. High Key Photography is a term associated with an image that has a very bright main light. Often that bright background light is wrapping around the subject. The “key light” in a photo is often the strongest source of light. If outdoors, your key light would often be the sun unless you used strobe lights to over power the sun. In a studio, the key light is normally the main light used to light your subject, while the other lights are there to create depth and control shadows. I have found that many of my high key photos were taken in situations where the light was way too intense to control. Sometimes the only thing you can do with a photo like that is to desaturate it into a black and white photo. I had a hard time finding a high key photo from my archives that was not a black and white photo. High key doesn’t mean blown out. If you search online, you will often find high key photos that have so much light pouring into them that it appears the apocalypse has just happened behind them. Having your main light source be high key simply means that your main source of light is very bright. From there it is up to you as the photographer to decide what …

Week #5 – Negative Space – Photography Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

We are now over a month into the 2017 Ditch Auto Weekly Photography Challenge. A few of you have told me that you have used your camera more so far this year than you have in the years you have owned your camera. That is awesome to hear. The purpose of the challenge is to get out and use your camera more. This week’s challenge is Negative Space. Negative Space in the context of photography composition is using the space surrounding your point-of-interest to draw the eye of the viewer. It is often that we fill the frame with our subject matter to bring them close and allow us to see the details. This week I want you to use the space around your subject to draw your viewer in. This means pulling back from your subject or even placing your subject strategically to include them in the negative space around them. In this challenge you can use anything as your point-of-interest and your negative space can be anything that can surround your subject. Upload your Week #5 challenge photos to the new Album in the Ditch Auto Group: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.1421107224579808&type=1 If you post your photos to your social media accounts, use the hashtag #ditchautochallenge Here are a few examples of negative space from photos I have taken in the past. Please challenge yourself to take new photos this week. I am sure you have some fantastic photos that fit the challenge but the goal of this challenge is to get out and take new photos. Feel …
